Galactic X-ray binary jets
With their relatively fast variability time-scales, Galactic X-ray binaries provide an excellent laboratory to explore the physics of accretion and related phenomena, most notably outflows, over different regimes. After comparing the phenomenology of jets in black hole systems to that of neutron stars, here I discuss the role of the jet at very low Eddington ratios, and present preliminary resu...
متن کاملCan X-Ray Jets Be Cosmic Beacons?
If X-rays observed from any extragalactic radio jets are due to inverse Compton scattering on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, then such a source will be detectable with the same surface brightness anywhere in the more distant universe. Chandra observations imply that such systems do exist, and will therefore serve as Cosmic Beacons out to the redshift at which they form.
متن کاملBlack hole X-ray binary jets
Relativistic jets powered by stellar mass black holes in X-ray binaries appear to come in two types: steady outflows associated with hard X-ray states and large scale discrete ejections associated with transient outbursts. We show that the broadband radio spectrum of a ‘quiescent’ stellar mass black hole closely resembles that of canonical hard state sources emitting at four orders of magnitude...
متن کاملUltra High Energy Cosmic Ray and Γ-ray Signatures of Inductive Acceleration in Agn Jets
The highest energy cosmic rays could be produced by drifts in magnetized, cylindrically collimated, sheared jets of powerful active galaxies (i.e. FR II radiogalaxies; radio loud quasars and high power BL Lacs). We show that in such scenarios proton synchrotron radiation can give rise to detectable photon fluxes at energies ranging from hundreds of keV to tens of MeV. Subject headings: AGNs-UHE...
متن کاملEnergisation of interstellar media and cosmic ray production by jets from X-ray binaries
Drawing on recent estimates of the power of jets from X-ray binary systems as a function of X-ray luminosity, combined with improved estimates of the relevant Log(N)Log(LX) luminosity functions, we calculate the total energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM) from these objects. The input of kinetic energy to the ISM via jets is dominated by those of the black hole systems, in contrast to t...
